SWCA CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

The Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA) is currently accepting nominations for board positions that will become active in February 2008. Each board position has a two-year term. All candidates must have current membership in SWCA. Current board members may run for re-election. If you would like to nominate an individual for the ballot, including yourself, and if you have questions about the positions or the election process, please contact Beth Burmester, SWCA Vice President, at bburmester@gsu.edu before 5:00 pm on Monday, October 8, 2007.

Each candidate will be asked to confirm his or her nomination and to electronically submit a 100-word position statement to Beth Burmester no later than Monday, October 15, 2007. This statement will appear on the ballot mailed to the membership. Those elected will be required to attend the Business Meetings held at the SWCA Annual Conference, which will take place February 7-9 in Savannah, GA. Board Members also confer frequently with each other via email, quarterly via conference calls,
and will be meeting for a weekend-long Board Retreat/Planning Session during the summer of 2008.

DESCRIPTIONS OF OPEN BOARD POSITIONS FOR SWCA, FALL 2007

President: The president of the SWCA chairs the Executive Board; moderates the out-going and in-coming Board meetings held as part of the Annual Conference; moderates the annual general business meeting for SWCA membership during the Annual Conference; serves in an ex-officio capacity on editorial boards of journals and on all committees (including planning of the annual conference); writes a column for Southern Discourse in Fall, Spring, and Summer; plans and moderates the Board Summer Retreat/Planning Meeting; and serves as liaison to the International Writing Centers Association. Term: Two years; serves on Board, in the capacity of Immediate-Past President, for year following end of two-year term.

Vice-President: The vice-president serves as parliamentarian during all official Board and membership business meetings; is responsible for handling elections, including issuing a call for nominations and developing a slate of nominees for vote by the membership before each annual conference, and organizing, mailing, and tallying ballots for elections of Board members and proposed resolutions; and collaborates with or assists the President and other Board members as needed throughout the term. The Vice-President shall assume the duties of the President in the President’s absence, including duties as SWCA representative at IWCA meetings and events. Term: Two years, with no immediate succession to President (renewable).

Secretary: The Secretary takes minutes at all business meetings; serves as custodian of the organization’s membership records; works with the Treasurer and the Conference Director in managing the membership list; and serves on additional Board committees as needed. Term: Two years (renewable).

At-Large Representatives (2): Board Members-at-Large attend Annual Business Meetings; attend the Summer Retreat/Planning Session; confer with other Board members via email and conference calls; chair, or actively participate in, at least one SWCA committee—Membership, Awards, Scholarships and Grants, among others; and help develop and execute short-term and long-term projects and goals in the best interests of the SWCA membership and our organization. Term: Two years (renewable).
