IWCA Workshop at NCTE: Sustaining Secondary Writing Centers in the 21st Century

Nov 10th, 2008 | By IWCA Web Editor | Category: Archives

Date: MW 16 on Monday, November 24
Time: 9:00 am - 3:30 pm
Location: 006B/HBG Convention Center, River Level

Featuring experienced writing center directors at the secondary and university levels, this all-day workshop will help teachers design and apply pedagogical models of writing center work with an emphasis on sustainability. Around five main themes–administrative politics, technology, academic literacy, daily realities, and assessment–participants will identify contextual challenges in their institutions. Considering a different theme each hour, facilitators will elicit participants’ concerns, present research, models, and strategies, and implement activities that will help participants devise action plans for maintaining and growing sustainable writing centers. Also, since isolation often characterizes the work of secondary writing center professionals, the workshop will feature between-strand interludes focused on strategies for professional sustainability.
