Culture and diversity between students and teachers are an ever changing and increasing phenomenon among college campuses across the nation. The writing centers at these same colleges and universities are impacted by this change as well. Where there once were rigid policies and pedagogies to which writing centers adhered, more and more schools are finding that these policies are slowly becoming antiquated. A cultural shift has taken place that demands that writing centers find ways to work successfully with their diverse student populations. Change is long overdue. As the first historically black university to host the SWCA conference, we stand ready to ignite and inspire change with the SWCA 2009 Conference. The theme is “The Writing Center’s Role in Student Success: 21st Century Strategies for Empowerment Rooted in Culture and Diversity.”
The main goal of this year’s conference is to address the changing demographics taking place in colleges and universities, but more specifically within their writing centers. This year, we encourage proposal submissions that focus on topics that specifically address the changes taking place in our culturally diverse environments.
Suggested presentation topics should include, but are not limited to the following:
• The design, set-up and structure of a student-friendly writing center in the 21st century
• The role of the writing center on college campuses in the 21st century
• Working with students who speak the vernacular
• The use of technology to reach and teach diverse cultures
• The potential influence of hip-hop and other elements of pop culture in writing center pedagogy
• Recognizing and accommodating gender differences among college students in writing centers
• Strategies for building successful working relationships with students in writing centers that support a diverse student population
• Working successfully with diverse age differences among students in writing centers
• Successfully addressing writing across the curriculum in the writing center
