Position Announcement: WC/Writing Coordinator at University of South Dakota (App deadline March 23, 2009)

The University of South Dakota invites applications for a writing program administrator to serve as Director of Writing and of the University Writing Center.

The Director of Writing supervises and schedules 25-30 MA and PhD teaching assistants, coordinates curriculum for writing courses, leads annual assessment of writing across campus, provides professional development programming for writing instructors and TAs, and serves on committees relevant to the position. The Director of Writing teaches a graduate course in composition pedagogy; other opportunities for teaching exist. As Director of the University Writing Center, this individual trains and supervises approximately 15 undergraduate peer consultants, including 2-3 MA students; organizes weekly workshops sponsored by the UWC; consults with faculty on issues related to writing; maintains UWC records; manages the financial resources of the UWC; and collaborates as needed with other entities to expand and publicize the contributions of the UWC.

This is an eleven-month, non-faculty exempt position that reports to the chair of the English Department. Summer responsibilities ordinarily include leadership of writing program assessment, preparation for an August TA orientation workshop, and teaching of a lower-division writing course. Preferred start date is July 22, 2009. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience.

The position requires a PhD in Composition and Rhetoric or equivalent, teaching experience at the college level, expertise in writing pedagogy, and the ability to interact with faculty members as a peer.

Desirable qualifications include expertise in writing program administration, experience in writing center administration and academic background in writing center studies, experience in assessment, and the ability to teach literature at the lower-division level. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have several years of prior professional experience in a related position.
