The Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) at the University of New Mexico is seeking candidates for the position of Program Specialist for the Writing and Language Center. The Writing and Language Center, a large peer tutoring program situated within the overall learning center of CAPS, serves the highly diverse and multicultural student population of UNM with a strong focus on multilingual writers, online pedagogies, and tutors as facilitators of peer-to-peer interactions.
The Program Specialist for the Writing and Language Center:
- Oversees the operation of the CAPS Writing and Language Center
- Develops program innovations for existing Writing and Language Center
- Leads/Participates in campus-wide and national academic dialogues on composition studies, writing center theory and practice, and language learning
- Liaisons with campus communities to assess and meet writing/language needs and to form partnerships
- Hires and evaluates graduate and undergraduate writing and language tutors in accordance with a larger vision of a multicultural, multi-service learning center
- Examines existing writing and language tutor training program and develops new training ideas
- Assesses Writing and Language Center effectiveness
A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of related experience are the minimum qualifications for the position; preferred qualifications include:
- A higher degree in Composition, Rhetoric, Applied Linguistics, or a related field
- Supervisory experience within a Writing Center, WAC, or Composition Program in a higher education setting
- Knowledge of local and national academic developments pertaining to Writing Centers, WAC, and Composition Theory
- Knowledge of local and national academic developments pertaining to second-language acquisition
- An active program of research (as evidenced in publications and/or conference presentations) in Writing Centers,
- Composition/WAC theory, L2 acquisition, or language rights
- Familiarity with online pedagogies, and with tools for engaging student writers and language learners in a digital environment
- Experience as a tutor within a university writing or language learning center
- Experience teaching in a field related to Composition, Rhetoric, or Languages at the University level
