Stanford University seeks a number of highly motivated lecturers to develop and teach intensive first and second-year writing courses in its Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR), a program in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE). Lecturers will join a lively community of teachers, writers, and researchers, including Stanford faculty, other lecturers, and graduate students from a range of disciplines.
Collectively, PWR teaches approximately 200 courses per year that fulfill the undergraduate writing and rhetoric requirement. Courses are taught seminar/workshop style in classes of 15 students each. Lecturers are responsible for developing syllabi for their sections in accord with course and assignment guidelines and participate in professional development activities through the program, including formal training in rhetoric, composition, and writing pedagogy. Additional responsibilities include work in the Hume Writing Center supporting the writing development of all Stanford students and substantive service on program committees.
Qualifications: Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred); we encourage candidates from all fields with demonstrated excellence in teaching and strong interests in the teaching of writing and communication. Specifically, we encourage candidates with backgrounds in the sciences, engineering, and the social sciences to consider applying.
Initial appointments are for at least one year beginning September 1, 2013, with the possibility of renewal. Salary range: $56,000-$60,000.
