Interim Director of the Writing Center for January- May 2013

This is a temporary, part-time, exempt position with pro-rated sick and vacation leave. The Writing Center director is responsible for administering the Writing Center and teaching courses and tutoring in academic writing and public speaking for both native and non-native speakers of English.

Vice Dean of Academic Programs

Salary:
30 hours per week at $23.00 per hour, with the possibility of a $2500 stipend for teaching PR208 Writing Workshop, beginning January 7, 2013 and ending May 22, 2013.

Performance Percentage Essential Job Functions
100% Demonstrate cooperative and courteous behavior with colleagues, students, visitors and supervisors.
65% Administer the Writing Center. Recruit, train and mentor student tutors. Manage the online appointment schedule. Select and acquire resources for use in the Writing Center. Publicize and promote use of the Writing Center to students, staff, and faculty. Develop and teach writing workshops. Work with students who need academic support.
25% Teach course in academic writing, as necessary. Tutor students individually in areas of academic writing and ESL. Provide academic support in reading and thinking critically.
10% Provide leadership for a Writing Across the Curriculum program, concentrated in first-year M.Div. classes. Work with faculty to provide support for specific courses, including teaching workshops and helping faculty design course materials that promote critical thinking, reading, and writing.

Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree or higher in English, TESOL, or related field required.
  2. Familiarity with Writing Center theory and practice is preferred, as well as experience teaching ESL and/or graduate-level academic writing.
  3. Strong computer skills that include experience with WCOnline, Skype, Gchat, Sakai, Excel, Google mail, PowerPoint, and Facebook.
  4. Demonstrated interest in and ability to work with a diverse student population.
  5. Background in religion or theology preferred.
  6. Ability to work independently and organize time and projects efficiently, as well as be able to respond to the immediate needs of a busy writing center.
  7. Strong written and oral communication necessary.
  8. Strong interpersonal skills necessary.
