Call for Papers

Please join us for our second annual Canadian Writing Centres Conference which will be held at Brock University on May 23rd, 2014 in St. Catherine’s, Ontario.  The conference immediately precedes the Congress of the Humanities  and Social Sciences Annual Conference(CHSS) We will provide a welcoming environment for tutors, writing centre administrators, and instructors for discussions of writing centre practice, theory and  research.   In keeping with the theme of  the CHSS  Conference, Borders Without Boundaries,  our theme  is “Writing Without Borders”.  We hope presenters will explore this theme in a variety of ways.  Topics that derive from this theme could include but are not limited to:

  • Writing support without hierarchical borders:  undergraduate, post-graduate, staff, faculty and mature student support
  • Writing support without disciplinary borders:  responding to cross-disciplinary papers / writing in the disciplines & beyond the disciplines
  • Writing support  without cultural borders; writing support for multilingual & multi-dialect writers
  • Communication  without borders:  writing support for multi-media assignments
  • Writing without physical boundaries:  using technology to respond to students’ writing; MOOCs and the Writing Centre.
  • Support for the supporters:  training and professional development issues in the Writing Centre

”Proposals are invited from tutors, instructors, administrators and others interested in the teaching of writing.  Proposals should in some way address the theme of writing without borders and/or one of the suggested topic areas. We welcome your proposal for one of three formats:

30-minute papers

  • Please plan for a 15-20 minute presentation to allow for discussion

60-minute workshops

  • Workshops should be interactive and appeal to a wide audience

60-minute panel discussions

  • Please submit your discussion topic along with names of presenters. If you are keen to discuss a topic but do not know others interested in leading a discussion on it, please let us know. We may be able to group people with similar topics.

SWCA-ALABAMA

2nd Annual Writing Center Symposium
“Writing Centers, Teaching, and Learning: Lighting Fires”
January 24, 2014
Samford University, Birmingham, AL
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” ~widely attributed to William Butler Yeats

Whether Yeats wrote or uttered the statement above or someone revised Plutarch’s “The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled” is perhaps less important than the sentiment both express: learning is active, powerful, and life-changing.

On January, 24, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., we will gather to discover, learn, and discuss the role of the writing center in student learning. Our keynote speaker will be 2012 Carnegie Professor of the Year, Dr. Stephen Chew, professor and chair, Psychology Department, Samford University. Dr. Chew is a recognized authority on teaching research, theory, and practice. He has received local and national awards for the quality of his teaching and is a leader in the scholarship of teaching and learning. To hear a little from Dr. Chew, visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH95h36NChI

As we prepare to listen to Dr. Chew, a cognitive psychologist, discuss teaching and learning, we invite you to consider with us how learning happens (or sometimes fails to happen) in our writing centers. To what extent does (or perhaps should) a writing center stoke the fires of learning, encouraging students to engage ideas through writing and through talk? What is authentic learning and how do writing center tutors facilitate it? How might tutors better engage students in deeper learning than they might otherwise engage in? How might writing center directors and tutor trainers better challenge tutors to be lifelong learners and teachers? How might tutors and directors assess learning that happens–or is ignited–in our centers?

Please submit proposals to Dr. Tony Ricks at tony.ricks@athens.edu by December 2, 2013 for consideration as a presenter at the conference. Presentations may be offered by undergraduates, graduate students and faculty/staff working in writing/ communication centers. Presentations may be single-authored or co-authored. Single authors may present a 15-minute talk or guide a 45-minute workshop. Co-authors may propose content for a 45- minute presentation or workshop, according to their teaching and learning interests. Letters of acceptance for presentation will be sent by December 16, 2013.
Graduate students, writing center directors, and writing center co-directors are also invited to help review submissions and discuss the program overview with Dr. Ricks and Dr. Brammer. If you wish to volunteer to help with the review and planning process, please contact Dr. Ricks via email by Dec. 2, 2013.
Those interested in attending the event should email Dr. Tony Ricks at tony.ricks@athens.edu by January 10th, 2014 and indicate the names of those in their group who will be attending.

There is a $10 registration fee per person at this event, which will be collected at the conference registration table on January 24th. Registration will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on January 24th.
**Lunch and morning refreshments will be included at the event.
