Assistant in the Writing Lab and Lecturer
Grinnell College announces a full-time, 9-month position available in the Writing Lab. The Grinnell College Writing Lab works in collaboration with faculty to support and improve student writing, offering for-credit writing courses as well as individual one-to-one tutoring sessions.
Responsibilities: Assistants/Lecturers teach composition—including argument, organization, style, and mechanics—in individual student appointments, in Writing Lab courses, and in workshops held across campus. They work collaboratively to help faculty teach writing, to organize the College’s Portfolio Assessment Project, to oversee the work of the Writing Mentors (peer tutors), and to keep the office running smoothly.
Qualifications: A Master’s Degree and three years experience are preferred, or equivalent education and experience in teaching writing. Must be familiar with a range of academic subjects and related writing conventions. Must be able to scan a three-to-five-page (or longer) paper, choose an appropriate focus, and convey sound advice about organization and style in a session of 40 minutes or less. Must be capable of working under stress, with minimal supervision and frequent interruptions.
