WRITING CENTER DIRECTOR

The Writing Center is a key component in an undergraduate and graduate education committed to student writing. Reporting to the Assistant VP for Academic and Student Support Services, this position facilitates the development and implementation of academic services in writing across the curriculum. Creates, implements and delivers writing and reading workshops and programs to meet the needs of students and faculty. Collaborates with academic departments and other support units to design and implement programs to improve student writing and reading. Works individually or with groups of students to promote academic success and retention. Guides and directs tutors to provide students with personalized writing instruction that reflects and integrates current writing theory and practice for a wide range of writing projects. This position includes teaching 1-2 sections per academic year of First Year Writing. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop innovative academic writing initiatives (workshops, in class presentations, class/discipline specific assignments, etc.) that support traditional, non-traditional, international and ELL student populations.
- Hire, train, support and evaluate graduate student writing tutors, providing them with professional development on writing pedagogy theory and practice.
- Provide cross-departmental leadership in matters pertaining to undergraduate and graduate writing in collaboration with identified School liaisons.
- Meet with students individually to assess learning needs in the areas of reading & comprehension. Deliver direct services or refer to appropriate resources (i.e., The Emery Educational & Clinical Center; Pauline K. Winkler Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic)
- Ensure writing and reading initiatives are accessible to all students and meets ADA compliance.
- Keep current with regard to best practices within the field by engaging in professional development regarding composition theory, WAC, educational technology practices.
- Participate as an active member of the WAC and the Integrity Committee, as well as other college committees as assigned. In coordination with Writing Across Curriculum Committee, annually coordinate the College’s National Day of Writing.
- Develop and implement on-going assessment tools (surveys, data analysis and research, etc.) to ascertain learning outcomes of the Writing Center that informs the Academic Support Center’s services and programs.
- Provide one-on-one academic coaching via the established model, inclusive of academic monitoring, for a roster of freshmen students. Assesses students learning outcomes that inform the Academic support Center’s services and programs.
- Increase awareness of the Writing Center’s services by creating and publishing appropriate marketing literature (digital, multi-media, social media, pamphlets and brochures).
- Teach at least one (1) section per academic year of First Year Writing.
- Teach developmental writing and reading (mini courses, workshops, etc.) during the summer and academic year as needed
- Master’s Degree in Rhetoric and Composition, English, ESL, Education or a related field; Ph.D. preferred.
- At least 2 years professional experience working in a college-level writing center, tutoring center, or a related environment.
- At least 1 year experience teaching writing at the college level
- Experience using a Learning Management System (i.e., Blackboard) and/or a tutor scheduling system (i.e., TutorTrac).
- Familiarity with the role of technology on writing pedagogy.
- Experience teaching/tutoring ELL students
- Demonstrated knowledge of WAC/WID
- Intermediate level computer skills using a Windows based operating system, specifically MS Word, Excel, ACCESS, Outlook and Internet
