DIRECTOR OF THE WRITING CENTER

This position reports to the Associate Dean of Student Services. The Director is responsible for the administration of the Writing Center and all its programs and for teaching or co-teaching at least one section per year of the Foundations in Graduate Writing and Presenting (FGWP) and/or the Graduate Writing Course (GWC) as well as creating and developing programs that serve the needs of the international community. The Director will work collaboratively with the Student Success Center (SSC) and will coordinate and create joint programs with the SSC team.
Teaching and Mentoring
· Will teach or co-teach at least one section per year of the Foundations in Graduate Writing and Presenting (FGWP) and/or the Graduate Writing Course (GWC).
· Is responsible for training and on-going evaluation of writing center consultants and adjunct faculty for both the Writing Center and the Languages for Graduate Studies courses.
· Is responsible for planning and facilitating on-going professional development activities and for mentoring the writing center consultants.
· Will actively seek out and make connections with faculty for joint discussions that enrich the professional development of the consultants.
Research and Development
· Is responsible for creating and/or development of courses and programs to meet the needs of the international student community at CGU.
· Will maintain her/his own professional development through membership in appropriate professional organizations (such as IWCA, CCCC, TESOL, AAAL, SSLW, etc.) and attend and/or present at their annual conventions.
Administrative and Operational
· Will oversee all tutoring services and programs at the Writing Center.
· Is responsible for advertising for, interviewing, and hiring of tutors and adjunct faculty for both the Writing Center and the Languages for Graduate Studies courses.
· Will coordinate the Writing Center’s workshops and programs.
· Will write annual reports on student usage, survey results, workshops offered, staff professional development, publicity, and budget of the Writing Center services.
· Will actively seek out and make connections with current and new faculty to promote awareness of what writing center consultants do.
· Will oversee publicizing the Writing Center’s activities to students, faculty, and staff.
· Will maintain coordination with the International Student Advisor.
· Will maintain contact with and manage the online appointment system.
· Will maintain the website for the Writing Center.
· Will recommend an annual budget to the Associate Dean of Student Services and will manage the approved operational budget.
A minimum of M.A. or M.A.T. in TESOL, English, Rhetoric and Composition, or related fields (Linguistics, Education, etc.) and a minimum of three years of college-level teaching experience, at least two years of which were teaching ESL at the college level. Administrative experience that includes: hiring, training, and supervision of employees. Writing or Learning Center experience required. A record of ongoing professional development activities within TESOL, writing, or related fields. A PhD is preferred.
Knowledge of English language assessment techniques (of all skills – reading, writing, listening, and speaking), exceptional teaching skills, and experience teaching oral-aural communication skills as well as teaching writing from a process-oriented perspective. Understanding of the distinctive nature of graduate education. Strong written and oral communication skills. Understanding of the language and cultural issues related to teaching international students and an ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from international backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse community of perspectives, needs, learning and working styles, and abilities. Will work with the SSC team to plan overall assessment of SSC programs. Will work with the Advancement Office on fundraising opportunities. Will attend relevant CGU and Claremont University Consortium (CUC) committee meetings.
