Writing and ESL Adjunct Faculty
Woodbury University is a small, private, non-profit university with approximately 1,600 graduate and undergraduate students. Students enroll in the School of Architecture; the School of Business; the School of Media, Culture, and Design; and the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies.
For the Fall of 2014 and Spring of 2015, the Writing Department, which is part of the Institute, seeks adjunct or part-time faculty to teach basic writing, freshman composition, and/or research writing classes and/or two-levels of ESL curricula. Regarding composition classes, an average section has fifteen students and all sections are capped at twenty students. Typically, ESL classes are smaller than fifteen students. Adjunct faculty starting pay ranges from $2,850 to $3,080 per course depending on qualifications. Besides teaching responsibilities, adjunct faculty are expected to participate in one to two workshops per semester regarding curriculum, assessment, and/or technology, which increases pay approximately by $200 to $300 per semester. Also, select faculty members are offered additional work in areas related to student support and/or assessment. All adjuncts are expected to work closely with the Writing Department Chair and/or the department’s ESL Director as well as the department’s other curricular leaders.
The minimum qualification for adjunct faculty is to have a Master’s degree in English, Linguistics, TESOL, or a discipline related to rhetoric and composition, plus experience teaching writing or ESL classes at the college or university level. The ideal candidate would have:
- Experience teaching basic writing, freshman composition, research writing classes and/or teaching ESL classes in higher education.
- Expertise in rhetoric and composition, and/or pedagogies appropriate for ESL students.
