California Institute of Technology Writing Specialist

Job Summary:

The Hixon Writing Center at the California Institute of Technology seeks an academic Writing Specialist to help support the teaching and learning of writing. This position will involve direct tutoring of students, helping to develop and lead writing workshops and presentations, and supporting faculty in their work teaching writing. The Writing Specialist will work under the direction of the Campus Writing Coordinator. Position is anticipated to start mid-September 2014 and continue through the beginning of June 2015.

Job Duties:

  • Tutor student writers one-to-one and in small groups
  • Help to develop and lead presentations/workshops for students on key topics related to academic writing in the humanities (e.g. making successful academic claims)
  • Help to develop new presentations/workshops to support undergraduate writing across the Institute
  • Help to develop resources related to academic writing in response to student need
  • Help to plan and execute events that foster a culture of writing on campus
  • Support faculty efforts to improve the teaching and learning of academic writing in their courses
  • Work with peer tutors to support their professional development and program development
  • Assist in administrative tasks related to program records and assessment and other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications:

  • A M.A. in Rhetoric/Composition, English, TESOL, or related fields
  • Experience working one-to-one with college-level writers on academic writing
  • Experience teaching college students about academic writing in a classroom (or large group) environment
  • Experience and training in working with multilingual students and students from diverse backgrounds
  • Familiarity with best practices in writing center pedagogy
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or significant work toward the degree in Rhetoric/Composition, English, TESOL, or related fields
  • Experience teaching in first-year writing programs
  • Interest in writing in the disciplines and/or writing across the curriculum
  • Familiarity with scholarship in the field of composition on topics relevant to the position (e.g. first-year writing, genre studies, transfer)
  • Experience with faculty development or program assessment
  • Experience working within a STEM-focused curriculum and/or genre knowledge about scientific and technical writing is advantageous but not required
