Assistant Dean of the College

Brown University seeks an experienced academic administrator to provide leadership, strategic direction, and management of the Writing Center and writing support initiatives. An integral part of the Office of the Dean of the College, Brown’s Writing Center is staffed by 40 graduate students from across the disciplines and the Director of English Language Learning. The Director/Assistant Dean oversees Center staff and operations, administers pre-orientation and peer tutoring programs in writing, and teaches two sections of a course in writing pedagogy each year. Working closely with faculty and administrators across campus, the Director/Assistant Dean supports writing in the disciplines and ensures that every undergraduate meets Brown’s writing requirement. The Director/Assistant Dean also contributes to the general work of the College by advising assigned cohorts of students and serving on the Committee on Academic Standing.

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Composition, Rhetoric, or Literature; 3-5 years’ experience directing a college or university writing center; 3-5 years’ experience teaching writing to undergraduates at a selective college or university; ability to articulate the role of writing in a liberal arts education; demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty, students, and administrators in delivering academic support programs; knowledge of current composition theory and best practices in writing pedagogy; and superb written and oral communication skills.
