Job Description: Under administrative supervision of the Associate Director for the University Academic Success Programs’ (UASP) Writing Centers, plans, organizes and coordinates activities, functions, and programs in accordance with priorities, or other specifications in the Writing Center at the Polytechnic campus.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Working Environment: Working Environment: Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10%); frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (15%); regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals. Receives regular review of work activities to ensure achievement of established goals and objectives.

Essential Duties:

  • Manages all aspects of operations for the Polytechnic Writing Center
  • Hires, supervises, schedules, trains and evaluates Writing Center student staff
  • Engages in professional development by monitoring current research and trends in writing center scholarship and composition studies
  • Collaborates as a part of UASP’s cross-campus writing workgroup to strategize and plan for ongoing program development, outreach, training needs, and student support
  • Uses writing center theory to develop curriculum for tutor training and ongoing tutor development
  • Develops and delivers workshops on writing-specific topics for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Performs administrative functions such as: tracking utilization of services, preparing budget proposals and recommendations for Polytechnic Writing Center, tracking expenditures for Polytechnic Writing Center, preparing data reports on a semester-by-semester basis, and assessing programs
  • Creates partnerships with academic and student affairs administrators to promote the writing center as well as develop new writing center initiatives
  • Promotes UASP programs and services across the Polytechnic campus
  • Initiates and maintains collaborations and working relationships with faculty, staff, and community partners to support students’ writing development and needs
  • Serves on various department and university committees
  • Facilitates department-wide programs such as the Dissertation Writing Camps, Early Start, and PASS program
  • Provides writing tutoring support as needed

  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical writing principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories of English Language Learners/English as a Second Language
  • Experience in developing and presenting workshops
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication
  • Experience in teaching in higher education or K-12
  • Evidence of a Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition, English Education, or related field

Department Statement: University Academic Success Programs (UASP), located on all four campuses and online, offer a dynamic, supportive learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students. The Writing Centers offer one-on-one appointments for ASU students to work with a tutor at any point during the writing process–from brainstorming to drafting to revising. Students from all majors and all courses can schedule either in-person or online writing tutoring appointments. The Writing Centers also offer Dissertation Writing Camps and foreign language tutoring in addition to partnering with local K-12 schools. The Student Success Centers provide free academic support resources for all students including subject area tutoring (both in-person and online), structured study groups (Supplemental Instruction), academic mentoring, and places to study. UASP employs ASU undergraduate and graduate students as desk assistants, subject area tutors, writing tutors, Supplemental Instruction leaders, online tutors, and academic mentors.
