The Achievement and Learning Center is a vibrant and student-focused department providing academic support to over 1500 students per year.   Our Assistant Director of Writing Services will manage, provide, and evaluate writing support through the Achievement and Learning Center’s writing center to UB students in every discipline and at every level  (undergraduate, graduate, and law).  Support may be provided to individuals, small groups, classes, and cohorts of students.  Responsibilities include:

Manage writing consultation program–Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate writing staff (assistant coordinator of writing services, graduate student and C-I writing consultants); arrange and provide ongoing professional development in writing center pedagogy, learning theory, strengths research, and the role of non-cognitive factors in student learning.  Coordinate publicity and outreach regarding writing services (student and faculty orientations, class visits, print and digital media, etc.)  Manage associated budgets.

Manage writing workshops and presentations–Determine student needs as well as respond to faculty requests; design and deliver/arrange delivery by writing staff.  Manage staffing and technological enhancements to the Online Writing Link (OWL), which provides audio and written feedback to students submitting drafts of their written assignments online.  Create, identify, evaluate and disseminate writing resources.  Provide writing consultations to graduate and law students.  Conduct assessments of learning outcomes; report outcomes and use results to improve services. Summarize and analyze data on service utilization; use results to maximize utilization of staff time and resources.

Collaborate with faculty, staff, and higher administration regarding goals for student writing: Work with department chairs, program coordinators, assistant/associate deans, faculty, CELTT (Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching, and Technology), the Office of Academic Support (School of Law), the Career and Professional Development Center, and the College of Arts and Science’s Writing Program Director and Writing Coordinator to coordinate and develop services that complement the curriculum and prepare students to meet workplace expectations. Continue development of consultation support for specific disciplines/classes.  Serve the Enrollment and Student Affairs division and the community: Represent the Achievement and Learning Center on Student Affairs committees and contribute expertise; offer occasional support to community high school students (workshops on writing personal essays for college, etc.)

Stay abreast of and implement best practices regarding 1) writing center pedagogy and programming, including online services/resources and 2) learning theory and practice appropriate to diverse populations (native as well as non-native speakers), including psychosocial factors affecting student motivation and perseverance. Participate in writing center and other relevant professional associations; conduct and support staff professional development that results in conference presentations/publications.  Research alternate funding sources and apply for grants to develop innovative writing support

Minimum Qualifications:  Required Education and Experience

Education:   Masters with emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition or in English and specialization in rhetoric/composition studies; training in second language acquisition.

Experience:  Minimum of three years’ experience developing and coordinating writing center activities, training writing staff, and teaching writing at the college level. Experience working with diverse student populations, including multi-lingual writers. Planning, managerial, supervisory, and assessment experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Education:  Ph.D or ABD with emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition or in English and specialization in rhetoric/composition studies

Experience:  3-5 years tutoring experience; experience in learning center environment; successful grant writing experience; experience with online service delivery; familiarity with writing in the disciplines and writing for the workplace. Experience in designing/implementing holistic and learning-centered programs that build long-term relationships with students, promote self-efficacy and perseverance, and connect writing to students’ academic and career goals. Experience with spreadsheets, social media, and student online appointment/recordkeeping systems; familiarity with human resource/student development theories and their practical applications.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong interpersonal, leadership, communication, and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and/or training. Knowledge of strengths-based pedagogies. Evidence of commitment to conference-based instruction and ability to communicate its theoretical foundations and real-world value.

Ability to work occasional Saturdays (ability to work occasional weeknights preferred)—at orientations, open houses, class or cohort presentations/workshops.
