Assistant or Associate Professor, Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy
The Department of English at the University of Houston is seeking a scholar, at either the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, tenure track, in the area of Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy. The successful candidate must have a record of successful scholarship and research as well as effective teaching that will contribute to the development of the Department’s growing graduate concentration in Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy.

The University of Houston is the premier doctoral institution in the nation’s fourth largest city. Please send letter, curriculum vitae, and dossier to Professor Wyman H. Herendeen, Chair, Department of English, University of Houston, 205 Roy Cullen Building, Houston, Texas 77204-3013. Review of applications will begin 2 December 2009 and will continue until the position is filled. The University of Houston is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. Minorities, women, veterans and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Some Additional Thoughts: Currently, the faculty in Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy includes James Kastely, Jennifer Wingard, Jim Zebroski, Paul Butler, and Tamara Fish; we also have five Houston Writing Fellows in the department. In addition to hiring this year, we hope to add more rhet/comp faculty members in the next few years. We have the opportunity to design and teach different graduate and undergraduate courses. Many sources of financial support are available from the department and university for developing our scholarship and teaching. The university’s confidence in rhetoric and composition is reflected in the administration’s approval of this new position in a difficult budgetary year.

The university has one of the most diverse student bodies in the country. Our undergraduate and graduate students are bright, hard-working, and open-minded. Our undergraduates include a substantial number of first-generation college students. They enjoy being part of a dynamic city and value their education. Even though our RCP concentration was just officially approved, we already have several PhD students pursuing the degree; thus, we have a community in place, and there’s a lot of excitement about the possibilities for developing the program.
