University System of Georgia

Chair and Associate Professor or Professor—Search #65340

Department of Writing and Linguistics

College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Writing and Linguistics with an appointment as Associate Professor or Professor of Writing or Linguistics. Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. A residential university serving more than 20,000 students in fall 2011, Georgia Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. In 2011, Georgia Southern was named the fourth most popular university in the country by U.S. News & World Report’s “Top 20 Most Popular Universities.” The nearly 700-acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

Within this setting, the Department of Writing and Linguistics houses a B.A degree in Writing and Linguistics with coursework in four areas: Creative Writing, Professional and Technical Writing, Writing Studies, and Linguistics. In addition to the major, we also offer a minor in writing, a minor in linguistics, a minor in professional and technical writing, a second discipline option in Technical Writing for the College of Information Technology, and an online graduate certificate in TESOL/Applied Linguistics. The Department is also responsible for defining and teaching the required First-Year Writing courses – a two-semester sequence which provides in-depth instruction in composition to all of Georgia Southern’s incoming freshmen.

In addition, the department sponsors the annual Student Success in Writing Conference; The Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy; the University Writing Center; and the Georgia Southern Writing Project, a satellite site of the National Writing Project. The Department publishes the journal Fledge Online, which showcases the best writing by students in first- year writing courses. Creative writing students have opportunities to publish their work in Miscellany, the campus literary magazine, and to compete for the annual Brittany “Ally” Harbuck Scholarship as well as the Roy Powell Creative Writing Awards in Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Nonfiction.

Position Description: Reporting to the Dean of CLASS, the Chair’s responsibilities include administrative, research and leadership duties as well as teaching two classes per academic year. The position is a 12-month, tenured appointment and requires a terminal degree. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Chair will be expected to help develop and strengthen the first-year writing program and the major, and provide support for departmental initiatives. The Chair would work within a collaborative departmental administrative structure, representing 48 full-time faculty members, which include an assistant chair, concentration coordinators, and a first-year writing coordinator. The successful candidate would embrace and further the cross-disciplinary nature of the department and its interaction with other departments in the University.

Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated commitment to student and faculty diversity and multiculturalism.

Experience in grant writing and fund-raising if appropriate to candidate’s discipline.

Qualification for tenured appointment at the rank of Professor, although candidates qualified only for tenure at the rank of Associate Professor are also encouraged to apply.

Director, Hume Writing Center
The Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) at Stanford University, a program within Stanford Introductory Studies (SIS) in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE), seeks a senior staff member to manage and direct the Hume Writing Center (HWC) and serve as Associate Director of Stanford Introductory Studies.

The HWC Director will have primary responsibility for providing leadership in developing and sustaining the varied mission of the HWC, managing the day-to-day services provided by the HWC, supervising the HWC staff, overseeing an undergraduate peer tutor preparation course, supervising a large corps of undergraduate writing consultants and a smaller corps of graduate writing consultants, and working collaboratively with and providing professional development opportunities for the PWR lecturers who tutor in the Center. In addition, the HWC Director will work closely with the Faculty Director of PWR and the Co-Director of SIS to coordinate day-to-day operations and develop long-term plans for the growth of the HWC as well as establish strong working relationships with other units in SIS and VPUE. The HWC Director will teach and tutor in the writing program and in the HWC and serve as part of the senior administrative team for SIS. This is a continuing senior administrative staff position, including administrative staff benefits and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Opened in October, 2001, the Hume Writing Center supports writing at Stanford through individual writing consultations, workshops, and seminars; HWC services are provided to all undergraduates, particularly those enrolled in SIS courses as well as those in Writing in the Major (WIM) courses and those writing Honors theses; the HWC Director will have substantial responsibilities in supporting WIM and Honors writing. The HWC also provides a range of services for graduate students including tutorials, workshops, and dissertation boot camps; the HWC Director coordinates the Center’s relationship to the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education. In addition, the HWC celebrates and sustains writing at Stanford through various events and performances. The HWC Director should thus have strong interests in supporting students’ academic work while also contributing to the development of a strong campus culture of writing. PWR and the Writing Center utilize computer-based technology both to teach writing and rhetoric and to support the development of students’ writing; therefore, the HWC Director would benefit from experience with computer-enhanced writing instruction. As the current writing and rhetoric requirement gives emphasis to oral and multimedia elements, the HWC Director should have experience and interest in these areas.

Qualifications include: Ph.D., experience teaching and tutoring writing, experience in writing program and/or university administration, and experience with campus-wide writing support.

The UWP is undergoing a significant redesign, and this new position will contribute to that ongoing process. Responsibilities may include training and supervising undergraduate as well as graduate student tutors, promoting the work of writing centers across campuses, and collaborating with the Director and Staff of the UWP and the Director of Composition to develop additional support for student writers across all levels and areas of the curriculum. This is a 9-month faculty position with significant reassignment for administrative responsibilities. In addition to those responsibilities, the person holding this position will teach graduate (MA and PhD) and undergraduate courses and maintain an active research agenda. Earned PhD required by August 2012, preferably in composition and rhetoric. Appropriate service to the university, community, and profession is expected.

Screening will begin December 1, 2011, and continue until position is filled. Salary commensurate with qualifications. Candidates for this position must complete a candidate profile and submit an application letter, curriculum vitae, one-page statements of teaching philosophy and research agenda, and writing sample online at http://www.jobs.ecu.edu. In addition, arrange for three current reference letters to be sent to: Jeffrey Johnson, Chair, Department of English, Mail Stop 555, Bate Building 2201, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC 27858-4353.

Official transcript required upon employment. East Carolina University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action University that accommodates individuals with disabilities. Individuals requesting accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) should contact the Department for Disability Support Services at (252) 737-1016 (Voice/TTY). Proper documentation of identity and employability is required at the time of employment.

About the University

East Carolina University is located in Greenville, NC, a growing city of over 75,000, located midway between Raleigh/Durham and the Atlantic coast. In addition to its proximity to the state capital and the beach, Greenville offers excellent parks and recreation programs and was recognized by Sports Illustrated as SportsTown USA for North Carolina.

From modest beginnings in 1909 as a school for training teachers, ECU has grown to become an emerging, national research university with an enrollment of more than 25,000. The school currently offers 104 bachelor’s degree programs, 74 master’s degree programs, 4 specialist degree programs, 1 first-professional MD program, and 17 doctoral programs in our professional colleges and schools, the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, and the Brody School of Medicine.

The school is deeply committed to serving the people of Eastern North Carolina, and has recently become one of only 195 institutions nationwide to receive the “community engagement” classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

For more information about the university, see our website at www.ecu.edu.

About the University Writing Program

The University Writing Program (www.ecu.edu/writing) at ECU is comprised of a Writing Across the Curriculum Program and a multi-site University Writing Center. The WAC program supports the University’s Writing Intensive (WI) Course Requirement. The WI course requirement for every student who graduates from ECU is a 12-hour requirement that currently includes the Writing Foundations sequence of two composition courses (ENGL 1100, ENGL 1200) and two more upper-division WI courses. At least one of the upper-division WI courses must be in the student’s major. In addition, the WAC Program coordinates all WI courses, which must be granted WI status by a cross-disciplinary WAC Committee.

The University Writing Center provides easily accessible, one-on-one assistance with writing assignments in all disciplines on campus. The UWC operates sites in Joyner library and three classroom buildings around campus, as well as an online writing lab for Distance Education students.

In January 2011, the University Writing Program began a process of reorganization which better leveraged current university resources to improve writing instruction and increase support for students and WI-faculty. This process involved making the English department the administrative home for the UWP and thus connecting Writing Foundations (English 1100 and 1200) more seamlessly with the Writing Across the Curriculum program. Additionally, the First-Year Studio (a writing center specifically for students in English 1100 and 1200; http://www.ecu.edu/first_year_studio) will join the UWP; this new hire will be responsible for helping to plan that transition and then direct the new University Writing Centers.

About the Department of English
The department of English is a vibrant and energetic collection of teachers, scholars, researchers and writers, with over 100 full-time faculty and over 100 graduate students. We offer three degrees: a B.A. in English, an M.A. in English with concentrations in eight different areas, and a Ph.D. in Technical & Professional Discourse. We also offer an undergraduate certificate in technical and professional communication and post-baccalaureate degrees in professional communication and multicultural and transnational literatures. The Department of English houses the university’s Writing Foundations (Composition) Program, and beginning in January 2011, will also house the University Writing Program.

The diversity of the department is one of its strengths: we feature courses and faculty in literature, creative writing, technical and professional communication, rhetoric and composition, multicultural and transnational literatures, linguistics, theory and criticism, folklore, children’s literature, teaching English to speakers of other languages, and film studies.
