Desde 2019 el Instituto de Verano de la IWCA es una experiencia para profesionales, investigadores y profesores que trabajan en centros de escritura universitarios emergentes o establecidos, o que participan en programas de fomento de lectura y escritura en contextos académicos. 

Tras la experiencia y los resultados positivos en la reunión celebrada en Colombia en 2024, consideramos que podemos continuar el diálogo con los Centros de Escritura que integran el IWCA y los que forman parte de la Red Latinoamericana, con el afán de disminuir la distancia entre el norte y el sur global en cuanto a las soluciones a las problemáticas derivadas de las prácticas de las literacidades académicas en la universidad.

Con este propósito, el Instituto de Verano 2025 se celebrará en México, en el campus de la Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP), ubicado en la ciudad de Cholula, con el fin de entablar una conversación equilibrada e inclusiva entre los asistentes, abarcando problemáticas relacionadas con la literacidad en el medio educativo anglosajón, lo mismo que en la esfera de influencia de los hablantes del español, tomando en cuenta coordenadas continentales y socioculturales. La oportunidad de interactuar productivamente, compartiendo la riqueza de nuestras tradiciones educativas, creemos, fortalecerá la integración iniciada en Colombia de una red académica global preocupada por atender las agendas pendientes en la pedagogía de la lectoescritura académica y científica en las instituciones de educación superior. 

Para ello hemos organizado un programa bilingüe con conferencias, talleres, debates, presentaciones de libros y actividades culturales que permitan dar un panorama sobre las enriquecedoras perspectivas desde las cuales reflexionamos y promovemos la lectura y la escritura en el contexto académico desde la complejidad de las particularidades socioculturales, institucionales y pedagógicas de cada uno de nuestros contextos.

Sobre la Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP)

La UDLAP es un campus ubicado en la histórica ciudad de Cholula, situado a pocos minutos de la ciudad de Puebla, capital del estado del mismo nombre. Destacamos que la UDLAP es una institución acreditada por la Southern Association of Colleges and Schools - Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC) cumpliendo así con los más altos estándares de educación a nivel universitario. En México, es una de las mejores universidades privadas, con programas académicos de calidad, experiencia y prestigio internacional. Cuenta con 250 convenios en programas internacionales con 42 países para realizar intercambios académicos, duales o prácticas en la profesión.

A través de un equipo de profesores de la UDLAP, el Centro de Escritura Académica y Pensamiento Crítico (CAEAPC), -uno de los primeros centros de escritura en México- y el Centro de Aprendizaje de Lenguas (CAL), la UDLAP ha preparado un programa para el IWCA Instituto de Verano que contempla reflexiones sobre los Centros de escritura como espacios para el desarrollo de literacidades académicas universitarias, y el desarrollo de habilidades discursivas académicas y científicas. Además de ello, buscamos observar la escritura como un lugar de formación sobre la Integridad Académica y observar los cambios en relación a la tecnología y la Inteligencia Artificial.

Sobre el CAEAPC y el CAL:

Son dos de los tres centros de aprendizaje en la UDLAP. Ambos centros buscan el fortalecimiento de las habilidades en la escritura en contextos académicos y profesionales, tanto en español e inglés, respectivamente, desde un sentido de acompañamiento y reflexión de la escritura. Con un equipo de profesores, los dos centros ofrecen asesorías de escritura, talleres, clubes de lectura y demás actividades de fomento de lectura. 

Sobre el Summer Institute 2025:

Los temas a desarrollar durante para el Instituto de Verano 2025 son los siguientes: 

1. Centros de Escritura y literacidades académicas universitarias.
   
2. Centros de Escritura como espacios para el desarrollo de habilidades discursivas académicas y científicas.
3.  Centros de Escritura para la formación en la Integridad Académica.
4. Centros de Escritura e Inteligencia Artificial.

Consideramos los siguientes elementos para tomar en cuenta en la logística del Instituto de Verano 2025:

1. Duración: cuatro días de trabajo académico en las instalaciones de la universidad, y un día de actividad cultural.
   
2. Horario jornadas de trabajo: 9:00 a.m. a 5:00 p.m. Hora de comida de 13 a 15 hrs.
   
3. Tres conferencias magistrales.
   
4. Cuatro talleres enfocados a las líneas temáticas
   
5. Dos paneles de discusión

Since 2019, the IWCA Summer Institute has provided a valuable forum for professionals, researchers, and educators working in both emerging and established university writing centers, as well as those engaged in initiatives that foster academic reading and writing within higher education.

Following the successful meeting held in Colombia, we aim to continue the dialogue between Writing Centers affiliated with the IWCA and those within the Latin American network. Our objective is to bridge the gap between the Global North and South by addressing challenges related to academic literacy in universities.

To this end, the 2025 Summer Institute will take place in Mexico, on the campus of Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP), in the city of Cholula. The event will foster inclusive, balanced dialogue on literacy across Anglophone and Spanish-speaking educational contexts, considering continental and sociocultural coordinates. We believe this opportunity to share our diverse educational traditions will strengthen the global academic network initiated in Colombia and support efforts to address pending pedagogical issues in academic and scientific reading and writing in higher education.

The bilingual program (English and Spanish) includes lectures, workshops, debates, book presentations, and cultural activities. All components are designed to offer an overview of the diverse perspectives from which we approach academic reading and writing, while acknowledging the sociocultural, institutional, and pedagogical specificities of each context.

About Universidad de las Americas Puebla (UDLAP)

With support from UDLAP’s faculty, the Center for Academic Writing and Critical Thinking (CAEAPC)—one of Mexico’s pioneering writing centers—and the Language Learning Center (CAL) have developed a comprehensive program for the IWCA Summer Institute. The program focuses on writing centers as spaces for the development of academic literacies and the advancement of academic and scientific discourse skills. It will also explore how writing can foster academic integrity and examine the evolving intersections between writing, technology, and artificial intelligence. 

About CAEAPC and CAL:

These are two of UDLAP’s three learning centers. Both are committed to enhancing writing skills in academic and professional contexts—CAEAPC in Spanish and CAL in English—through guidance-based and reflective writing practices. With a team of instructors, both centers offer writing consultations, workshops, reading clubs, and a variety of activities to promote reading and writing development.

The International Writing Centers Association is delighted to announce the selection of a new editorial team for Writing Center Journal:

The incoming editors were selected because of their leadership within the writing center community, their history of supporting and serving IWCA and its members, and their extensive experience publishing in our profession’s most impactful journals, including Writing Center Journal, Writing Lab Newsletter, College Composition and Communication, College English, Praxis, The Peer Review, and others. The Publications Committee was impressed with the team’s vision for WCJ, including its commitment to diversity and inclusive editorial practices that prioritize pursuing scholarship from non-U.S. writing center researchers. The Committee also applauded the team’s plan for employing a formative approach to mentoring authors who submit manuscripts, while maintaining the high standards of the organization’s flagship journal.

IWCA also thanks the Publications Committee (Co-Chairs Luke Morgan and Kem Roper and committee members Lisa Bell and Harry Denny) for the work they did to bring this search to a successful close.

Purpose

International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) serves to strengthen the writing center community through all of its activities. The organization offers The IWCA Dissertation Research Grant to support doctoral students as they work on writing center-related dissertations. The grant is intended to fund expenses incurred by doctoral students who are working toward completion of a dissertation and a doctoral degree. The funds may be used for living expenses; supplies, materials, and software; travel to research sites, to present research, or to attend conferences or institutes relevant to the profession; and other purposes not covered here but supportive of a dissertating graduate student. Doctoral students who have an approved prospectus and are at any stage of research/writing beyond the prospectus are encouraged to apply.

Grant recipients will receive a $5000 check from IWCA upon selection as the award winner.

Complete application packets will contain the following items in one pdf file.

1. Cover letter addressed to current chair, IWCA Grants Committee.The cover letter sells the IWCA Board on the mutual benefits that will result from their financial support. Anything that applicants do to link this project to their specific career goals and to the needs of the writing center community is welcome. It should include the following:

     Introduce the applicant and the project
     Outline plans for completion of the project

2. Two letters of reference: One from the dissertation director and one from a second member of the dissertation committee. These letters can be sent directly to the Grants Chair via iwcaofficer@gmail.com with the subject line: Dissertation Grant Recommendation Letter for ___

For full consideration, your project MUST have all required approvals, including but not limited to institutional IRB approval. 

Grant recipients will agree to the following:

• Acknowledge IWCA support in any presentation or publication of the resulting research findings
• Forward to IWCA, in care of the Grants Committee Chair, copies of resulting publications or presentations
• File a progress report with the IWCA, in care of the Grants Committee Chair, due within twelve months of receipt of grant monies.
• Upon completion of the project, submit a final project report and a PDF of the completed dissertation to the IWCA Board, in care of the Grants Committee Chair
• Strongly consider submitting a manuscript based on the supported research to one of the IWCA affiliated publications: The Writing Center Journal or The Peer Review. Be willing to work with the editor(s) and reviewer(s) to revise the manuscript for possible publication

As the 2025 CCCC annual convention approaches, I write to remind you of a number happenings that may be of particular interest to members!

1. The IWCA Collaborative@CCCC is being held on Wednesday, April 9, from 8:30-6:00. We would love you have you join us for a day of conversation, connection, and collaboration with fellow writing center(ed) colleagues! Registration is open through April 4 and includes access to all sessions, as well as breakfast, lunch, snacks, and an evening reception.      Named after its first recipient and given at every other International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) conference, the Muriel Harris Outstanding Service Award (MHOSA) recognizes a writing center professional for outstanding and sustained service that has had an enduring impact on the writing center community over the course of their career in significant and broad-based ways.

     We encourage all members of the writing center community to consider nominating, or re-nominating, an individual whose professional service in the form of leadership, scholarly contributions, mentoring, and teaching have had an enduring impact on the field and merit recognition in the form of this award.

• A letter of nomination that includes the name and institution of the nominee, your personal knowledge of or experience with the nominee’s service contributions to the writing center community, and your name, institutional affiliation, and email address.

• Supporting documents (maximum of 5 pages; approx. 3000 words). These documents may include an abbreviated curriculum vitae that emphasizes writing center work, published material, or original work by the nominee.

• Letters of support (optional but limited to 2)

     All materials must be received by Michael Pemberton by June 15, 2025. The winner of the Award will be announced at the 2025 IWCA Conference in Cincinnati, OH, October 16-18, 2025.

IWCA's Graduate Student Organization (IWCA-GO) seeks a Vice-Chair, Secretary, and User Experience Coordinator. These roles offer graduate students valuable leadership opportunities as well as a like-tasked community. 

If you are a graduate student, visit the IWCA-GO Website, join this IWCA Affiliate (it's free), and consider running for office (IWCA-Go's Call for Officers). If you are not a graduate student, please share the call with your colleagues and students.

The CCCC Feminist Caucus is currently accepting applications for Caregiver Grants (funded by CCCC organization) for the upcoming conference. This year, we will be offering grants up to $300 to help offset the costs of caregiving expenses. Information about the Grant, including a link to the application, can be found here: https://cccc.ncte.org/cccc/conv/caregiver. In collaboration with the CCCC Feminist Caucus, CCCC is pleased to offer small grants of no more than $300 per attendee that can be used to offset the costs of dependent care expenses at the 2025 annual convention, or for other caregiving needs as described by the applicant. The grant is intended for caregivers, including those caring for children, a spouse, a parent, and/or any friend or family member who needs assistance with daily activities. The grant may also be used for those who require a caregiver to attend the conference. Priority for these funds will be given to contingent faculty members, graduate students, and/or independent scholars without institutional support.
To apply for funds, please complete the application form by 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, February 10, 2025.
The committee will review the submitted applications and rank them, prioritizing the following criteria:

• Available funding for conference attendance 
• 
  
• Conference participation commitments 
• 
  
• How participation in the convention will advance the applicant’s personal and professional goals 
• 
  
• How the award will support applicant’s contributions to the profession and the CCCC organization 
• 
  
• How the grant will help with caregiving responsibilities 
• 
  

Applicants who have received funding from CCCC for another award or scholarship will not be considered.
Selected recipients will be notified by the CCCC Feminist Caucus by March 12, 2025. Selected recipients will then work with the CCCC Liaison to submit paperwork required to receive funding. The award process will be completed in advance of the CCCC 2025 convention.

Procedures for Award Recipients
After the convention, grant recipients should submit a one-page summary indicating how the funding supported the recipient’s participation in convention activities. Please submit the funding report to Feminist Caucus Care Grants Coordinator Alex Hanson by May 12, 2025.
